Coming off of a sweep of last year's PSAC Championships, and two great performances in the NCAA II championships, the men's and women's swimming teams at West Chester are set to defend their titles.
And so far, they have done what they have to do to accomplish that, by going a combined 6-0 in their first three weeks of competition.
The Golden Rams first swimming and diving match up came against the Shippensburg Raiders, an event where West Chester blew Ship out of the pool. The men and women Rams combined to outscore the Raiders by 184 points on the day.
The WCU men took 12 of the 13 events on the day, holding the upper hand the entire match, leading to their 184-76 triumph.
Standouts for the men's team were Brendan Fanslau, David Smoker, Bud McLernan, and Kevin Moyer, each of whom won two events on the day.
The ladies team in turn won all 13 of their events against Shippensburg en route to their 168-92 victory. Jackie Borkowski and Erin Fischer each won three events in the West Chester win.
"We are working hard to try to defend our PSAC title. I was glad to help the team score points against a good conference competitor," Fischer said on the match against Shippensburg.
Next up for West Chester were the Kutztown Golden Bears. While this golden match up didn't produce as big of a blowout, West Chester still came out the victors on both the men's and women's side.
The men won eight of the 13 events this time, ultimately coming out on top 112-93. Matt Golebiewski led the Rams with two wins in the meet. Brendan Fansiau, Bud McCleman, Rod King, and Phil Luzny each added a victory of their own, in addition to two-team relay victories.
The women overcame the Bears with a similar margin to the men, 116-89. Borkowski and Megan Bauer led the team this meet with two wins each, while Fischer added another victory. The sixth event win came in the 200m free relay.
West Chester's third contest was against the tough non-league Lehigh University. The women took a somewhat easy victory 161-124. The men, however, had a tough battle on their hands, rivaling the USA in the 2008 Olympics in the event where Michael Phelps won his third gold medal of the games.
