Releasing live or greatest hits albums seems to be a constant trend among popular music artists, used to boost both record sales and their reputations. While these discs don't often contain anything new or exciting, Live in Buffalo: July 4, 2004 from The Goo Goo Dolls proves to be an exception to the rule. Recorded in the band's hometown, the release features the best tracks from their impressive discography. With seven albums behind them, including Hold Me Up in 1990, Dizzy Up The Girl in 1998, and Gutterflower in 2002, The Goo Goo Dolls have had a series of popular hits and established a large and devoted fan-base.
First coming together in 1987, guitarist/vocalist Johnny Rzeznik, bassist Robby Takac and drummer George Tutska started as a cover group initially named the Sex Maggots. However, it wasn't long before the band expanded their talents and began to write their own music. With a sound compared to that of The Replacements and The Gin Blossoms, the trio first signed with the heavy metal label Metal Blade, later jumping to a major contract with Warner Brothers Records.
Along with their label change, the band's sound has progressed throughout their career, losing its metallic edge and taking on a mainstream pop-rock rhythm. The Live in Buffalo CD includes smash hits like "Name," "Big Machine," "Naked," "Black Balloon," "Here is Gone" and "Broadway." It also contains a rare live performance of "Iris," from the City of Angels Soundtrack, a rock-ballad that spent 18 weeks topping the charts and was also nominated for three Grammy awards.
In addition, the album features two versions, studio and live, of the band's latest cover of Supertramp's "Give A Little Bit." Recorded in 5.1 Surround Sound on the steps of Buffalo's City Hall in the pouring rain, this 20-track disc has feel of an authentic concert experience.
As an extra bonus, a DVD of the concert is also included in the package, which allows fans to see and hear the live performance first-hand. The film also has special features including an exclusive half-hour behind-the-scenes documentary and voice-over commentary from the band.
According to www.warnerbrosrecords. com, Rzeznik said, "The July 4 concert was a great homecoming for us as a way to thank our fans and reconnect with our roots...Now with Live in Buffalo, we can thank the world for giving us the opportunity to let our music be heard. We hope the album will give our fans everywhere something to remember us by until we're back in their town."
Altogether, the latest release from The Goo Goo Dolls defies the stereotypes put on live albums and gives fans a new look at the band. This CD/DVD release is definitely something to add to your holiday wish list.
