While grocery shopping the other day, I couldnot avoid the plethora of red and pink displays for Singles? Awareness Day, otherwiseknown as Valentine?s Day. I began wondering where this holiday emerged from, and attempted to seek out reason for what I?ve always thought of as just another Hallmark holiday wrought with consumerism and pointlessness.

Jan. 30, 2005 is a significant date in world history, for it is the day Iraqis for the first time went to the polls to vote. This day in history is not only momentous for Iraq, but also the United States, the Middle East and the entire freedom-loving world.
First of all, I don?t want to be labeled as the "black writer," but since it is Black History Month, this is a good time to address certain topics. For instance, why is there a Black History month? I often hear white students (and non-students) ask this question.
