Who knew that Long Island had another beautiful creation to offer the world besides their iced teas? Taking Back Sunday was formed in 1999, and in December of 2000, after completing its lineup with Adam Lazzar (lead vocals), Fred Mascherino (guitar and vocals), Eddie Reyes (guitar), Mark OʼConnell (drums) and Matt Ruban (bass), their hardcore, harmonious sounds hit the studio to record their first demo.
The five-song CD was released in early 2001, and after a year of self-promoting and touring, the demo circulated to an east coast representative who signed them to Victory Records. Their debut album, Tell All Your Friends, produced by Sal Villanueva and recorded in New Jerseyʼs Big Blue Meanies Recording Studios, was released in March of 2002 and sold over 500,000 copies.
After dropping their first album, a sold-out summer tour gave fans a glimpse of the "monsters of emo" they would soon become. The band started playing with more well-known acts such as The Used, Jimmy Eat World, and Saves the Day. These shows soon led to their appearance on the cover of Alternative Press and features in Rolling Stone and Spin. With all the publicity, their popularity snowballed and the fans at their shows were singing along so loudly that it was hard for the band to hear the stage sound. Their sophomore album, Where You Want to Be, was released on July 27, 2004, and in one short week it debuted in the #3 spot on the Billboard Top 200 chart with 163,000 units in sales. The band then headlined a tour selling out venues across the United States.
Now, after returning to the United States from their third European tour, this Long Island rock phenomena is heading to West Chester, Pa.
The five musicians are taking this town by storm, and will perform on Thursday, April 7, 2005 at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at the SSI Service Center for $15 (with WCU ID) and theyʼre selling quickly. My guess is that Hollinger Gym will be insanely packed and it will be one of the best shows WCU has seen.
