The West Chester baseball team swept Merrimack (MA) 4- 2 and 11-1 Saturday afternoon at Serpico Stadium in West Chester. The two wins improved the Golden Ramsʼ record to 9-5, and their winning streak to seven straight games. The Warriors fell to 1-11.

Jeff Brennan of WCU set the all-time career victory mark with his 23rd career win, passing Chuck Fritzʼs 22. During just one game, he struck out seven, scattered seven hits, allowed one earn run, and did not allow a walk. Merrimack may have out-hit WCU 7-4, but the Golden Rams capitalized on each opportunity to come their way, building a 3-0 lead through three innings. Mike LaRosa doubled and then scored a run, while Ben White doubled, walked a drove in run. Nate Guers also had a base hit, scored a run, and drove in another and walked.

During the second game, Gailey of Merrimack only allowed three hits, struck out eight and gave up one earned run, and did not permit a walk, giving WCU no free passes. Merrimack started the second game with a 1-0 lead, but the Golden Rams came back with 11 unanswered runs. John Moylneauz was 4 for 5 with two RBI and a run scored. Mark Gilliford was 3 for 3 with a run plus and RBI. Kyle Bechter scored his first home run in his career for WCU. He also drew a walk and finished with two RBIs. Drew Pare drove three runs on a double, while finishing the game 2 for 3 with a walk, run and three RBIs. The Golden Rams will face Philadelphia Tuesday at 3 p.m. at home.

Womenʼs Rugby

West Chester Universityʼs womenʼs rugby team destroyed the previously unbeaten Temple 51-7 Saturday morning in a nonleague match-up at home. The Golden Rams had a 20-0 halftime lead. Kati Fritz tallied her first career try. Sheena Woodard also scored her first career try bringing the score to 10- in favor of the Golden Rams. Stephanie Burkhardt tallied two trys in the first half 16 minutes apart to bring the score to 20-0.

In the second half, Giselle Gonzalez tallied back-to-back trys opening the period. Whitney Hartshorne earned a conversion on Gonzalezʼs second try, and then earned a conversion on her own try later in the half to bring the score to 39-0. Captain Jen Schwenk also tallied a try for the Golden Rams, and Woodard closed out the offense with a try late in the second half. Hartshorne also earned a conversion on that last try. The Golden Rams improved to 7-2, while Temple, the EPRU Division II Champions in the fall, fell to 7-1. WCU will face Navy in Annapoliz, MD, on Saturday in the MAAARFU Quarterfinals.
