Women?s Rugby

While battling wind and heavy rain, the West Chester women?s rugby team drove past Salisbury State 29-3 Saturday afternoon in Princeton, NJ in the fifth-place semifinals of the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union Playoffs. The victory over Salisbury State propels WCU into the fifthplace game Sunday afternoon against James Madison University.

The Golden Rams jumped to a 5-0 lead only five minutes into the game as Rachel Fink scored the first try of the game. Katie Black and Whitney Hartshorne improved the score to 12-0 13 minutes later after Black scored a try and Hartshorne tallied the twopoint conversion.

Salisbury tallied a penaltykick to bring the West Chester lead down to 12-3, but Sheena Woodard of WCU answered with a try for a halftime score of 17-5.

The Golden Rams posted he only points in the second half as Kara Beitzer and Kylee Lamb each scored a try. Hartshorne scored her scored conversion after Beitzer?s try.

The victory improved the Golden Rams? score to 8-3 on the season, looking for a chance to make it to the National Sweet 16 for rugby in Gainesvile, FL April 16-17.

The Golden Rams can reach the Sweet 16 by defeating James Madison Sunday to become the fifth and final representative from the MARFU region.


Baseball

The West Chester University baseball team split a doubleheader at Kutztwon University Friday afternoon to open the 2005 PSAC Eastern Division schedule.

The Golden Rams won the opener 6-1 but lost the second 5-2. WCU is now 1-1 in the PSAC East and 12-8 on the season. During the opener, Jeff Brennan pitched his fourth win of the season throwing a seventh inning game. Brennan struck out four, allowed four hits and just one run. Joey Yeager produced a 3-for-4 outing with a run scored. Dan Toner had a base hit for WCU and two RBIs.

During the second game, Kutztown defeated WCU 5-2 by allowing only four base hits from the Golden Rams from John Molyneaux. Ben White, Ryan Flynn and Toner.

The Golden Rams were scheduled to face Kutztown University Saturday afternoon, but due to inclement weather, the game was reschedule for Monday afternoon at four p.m. at Serpico Stadium.


Softball

The West Chester University softball team broke its nine game losing streak by defeating Mansfield University Friday afternoon 3-2. The win improved the Golden Rams? record to 1-7 n the PSAC East and 11-14 on the season.

Jackie Ludwig struck out three hitters from Mansfield while scattering five hits for the win. Kim Fulmer tallied two base hits and drove in one run, while Tara Colantuono and Brittney Davis each tallied a hit and a run scored.
