In June, many rental leases end for students in West Chester. Students from the Residence Halls will be leaving sooner than that.

Upon packing up and culling many of the things accumulated over the year, as well as things simply too big and not valuable enough to take home, we should all keep in mind the environment in terms of trying to find someone to reuse an item, recycling the proper waste items, and disposing of other trash in an appropriate manner.

Last summer, I remember driving around town looking for things to pick up because there are simply so many items of furniture out on the curb waiting for trash pickup. "One person?s trash is another person?s treasure," is definitely true. Among the treasures I found was a wooden bureau and a really nice large decorative mirror.

Instead of automatically going to the store, or even to good will, I encourage everyone to scrounge the streets as I did to look for items that could be used again. The benefits are that it will be free, you will most likely only have to move it a few blocks, and most importantly, it is saving it from the landfill.

Often we forget that the environment is one of our most precious commodities. However, many do not even consider it and go blindly from day to day, creating and improperly disposing of excessive waste. I believe that society as a whole, and especially college students, have lost a connection with the environment.

One reason for this could be the many SUV commercials on television. SUV?s and other vehicles are often shown dominating the pristine wilderness, which is equating nature with an unreal paradise, as well as something distant from our lives. These powerful images serve to mask the reality of our destructive environmental practices.

The commercials do not address the environmental effect of what they are promoting, such as how much gasoline we are putting into the atmosphere due to the popular use of SUV?s, as well as the erosion caused by wilderness sport trucking.
