During the past couple of months, one of the main buildings on WCU campus is receiving a one million dollar facelift to survive the upcoming years of weather.

Anderson Hall, located on South Church Street, is being renovated to improve the structure of the deteriorated roof. "Many rainy summers and snowy winters have caused water to begin leaking through the roof causing damage to the classrooms and offices," said Dee Giardina, WCU's interim executive director of facilities, design and construction.

C&DWaterproofing Corporation of Bloomsburg, Pa., began work on the roof of Anderson Hall this summer. "The job includes replacement of the slate roof and the sub-layer underneath, relining of the gutters and resealing gutter joints and will cost WCU approximately one million dollars," said Giardina.

Anderson Hall was built in 1938 with very unique features. Its arch entrances, steep gables and decorative elements show signs of its ancestry in collegiate Gothic, according to The Architecture of WCU, a brochure written by professor emeritus Walter Hipple, of WCU.

The construction of Anderson Hall is to be completed by mid-October. C&D Waterproofing Corporation is trying to get the job done earlier, despite experiencing delays during the summer. The delays stemmed mainly from the extreme heat on the roof that caused unsafe conditions for the construction workers.

The classrooms and offices in Anderson Hall are getting a facelift as well. During nighttime hours, crews are repainting the walls and replacing the tile floors. They are also working to improve the efficiency of energy output in the building.

With one month left to finish the construction, Giardina said if C&D Waterproofing Corporation is not finished by the contract completion date, penalties will be enforced and a fine is likely to be incurred.
