Football welcomes 27 member recruiting class

Issue date: 3/26/07 Section: Sports
The Golden Ram football team announced its 2007 recruiting class last week, which brings 27 newcomers to a squad that captured the Lambert Cup as the best team in the East Region of Division II Football.

This year's recruiting class features 17 offensive, and 10 defensive players, including one first team all state pick.

On the offensive side of the ball, Head Coach Bill Zwaan and company sought depth behind Mike Washington at the wide receiver position at the onset of the off-season and netted five receivers. In addition, Jackson Fagan joins a Golden Ram stable of halfbacks that includes fifth year senior Osagie Osunde and sophomore D'Andre Webb. Fagan figures to return kicks and could emerge as the third back in a committee that rivals any team in the PSAC East.

The biggest question mark for the Golden Rams

defensively in 2006 was the play of its secondary.

With this in mind, the coaching staff signed four

defensive backs who figure to have an early impact

beginning with practices this spring. WCU also added three defensive lineman and three linebackers to

bolster current strength areas on the roster.

"We targeted these 27 individuals right from the start, and it says a lot about our dedicated staff that we were able to sign each and every one of them. This year's class carries with it an outstanding academic resume as well. The coaching staff is particularly proud of that fact."

The fact that West Chester was able to net all 27 of its targeted prospects speaks volumes to the recruiting power of Zwaan. WCU has emerged as a top tier team in the PSAC of late, and this class lays the foundation for continued success for this club.

The team kicks off spring practice in April, culminating with the Annual Purple vs. Gold game April 26.
