Despite steamy conditions and tempers boiling over, the West Chester men's soccer squad opened its conference schedule with a 4-1 victory over Millersville on Wednesday, but failed to carry momentum into an out of conference loss to Lock Haven.

Less than ten minutes into Saturday's contest, Lock Haven's Phil Liversedge scored on a header of a corner kick from Ashley Rosindale. West Chester answered with a goal from midfield Jason Mackel, his first of the season.

With the score tied 1-1, Lock Haven's Paul Mackel scored in the 23rd minute to put Lock Haven ahead for good. Terrance Gochera added a goal for Lock Haven before the first half with Rosindale adding another assist.

Forward Frank DeMas added his third goal in two games, but missed a penalty kick early that could have changed the outcome of the game.

Lock Haven outshot West Chester 11-10, with both goalkeepers recording two saves.

The Golden Rams (2-2) began play with vigor and physicality despite temperatures in the middle 80s. West Chester got on the board early with a goal from forward Frank DeMas in the 27th minute.

The Marauders (0-1-1) countered with a goal from forward Tim Hollenback off his own rebound. Neither team scored again in the first half despite questionable defensive tactics leading to arguments between Rams, Marauders and referees.

"We weren't playing the way we can play [in the first half]," head coach Kendall Walkes said. "We played with tunnel vision."

Walkes encouraged the team to come out moving the ball around more using the entire field, which showed in their second goal off the foot of DeMas, 11 minutes into the period. Demas scored unassisted up the sideline. DeMas would finish with two goals and an assist.

On defense, the Rams aimed to prevent Millersville's pressure and slow the game down sparking frustration from Millersville forward Chris Teter who screamed, "That's what they do when we pressure." The frustration stemmed from a ball being kicked out of bounds preventing a Millersville rush.
