The West Chester Lady Rams' field hockey team won the first game of the second Annual Vonnie Gros Classic on Saturday which included the Monmouth Hawks, North Carolina Tar Heels, and the Villanova Wildcats.

Fourth-year player Sara Conrad got the scoring going started in the game as the Golden Rams opened up the tournament against the Hawks from Monmouth University.

The goal was Conrad's fourth in two contests. Conrad is the reigning PSAC player of the week.

The Lady Ram's continued their early scoring by putting up four goals before the half.

With the lead at halftime, the Rams continued their offensive onslaught by scoring five more times in the second half to cruise to a 9 - 0 win.

Adding goals to the victory were fourth-year player Shelly Brooks, third-year player Desiree Walker and Lauren DuBois, and second-year player Kim Hanshue and Amanda Wynkoop. The Rams utilized tough defense to keep pressure off sophomore goalkeeper Joelle Zarefoss who kept the Hawks off the scoreboard while going coast to coast in goal for the Rams.

"We played as a team, had a lot of energy, and used our speed today," said head coach Kathy Krannebitter following the win.

Coach Krannebitter showed a lot of class and sportsmanship immediately after the game by offering some words of encouragement to the young Monmouth Hawks team about their performance and effort.

The Rams were scheduled to play the UNC Tar Heels Sunday afternoon. The Tar Heels of North Carolina enter the game ranked second in the country in Division I women's field hockey.

The results of the game were not available at our deadline.
