The Queens of the Stone Age turn 10 years old this year, and they celebrated by releasing a new album, "Era Vulgaris." They should have held off on the celebration; what they released was something that nobody being paid to make music should have ever even thought of making: 11 tracks and 48 minutes of mostly insufferable rubbish.

The album seems to have been rushed through the creative process. The lyrics are just thrown together and drowned out by the guitar on almost all the songs. That would not be such a bad thing if the guitar was decently put together. However, it sounds like its part of a garage band and is so overdone that it makes the songs sound absolutely horrible.

This album should never be compared to anything the Queens of the Stone Age has ever produced. Their older albums were pretty good; they had well-thought out lyrics and awesome guitar. This album is a disappointment to anybody who has ever thought that the Queens of the Stone Age was a good rock band. It is so far below anything that they have released before.

The album does have a few good points. There are two tracks that make this CD more bearable. The track "Sick, Sick, Sick" is the first bright spot on the album; it has creative lyrics and decent guitar, and it mixes both of them well.

The second bright spot in the album is the song "3's and 7's." Like "Sick, Sick, Sick" it combines good guitar and well thought out lyrics and mixes them with a great beat to create the best thing on this CD.

Unfortunately for the Queens of the Stone Age, the two awesome songs don't help the CD climb out of the hole it dug for itself. Overall, the album is only for those who really like the Queens of the Stone Age. If you are not a hardcore fan of them then don't buy this CD.

Despite its nine horrible and drawn out songs, the two good songs on the album help it a lot and the hard work that the band put into creating this album count for something. However, those two things do not salvage its fate.

If you have to buy the CD then go out and buy it. However, if not, download the two good songs for yourself and use the money you saved to go buy one of their earlier CDs.
