On Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007 13 WCU students were given the opportunity to attend the first in a series of Fireside Chats with Dr. Bill Cosby at Temple University's College of Education.
This event, modeled after the Fireside Chats or informal radio addresses of the late US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, addressed the trials and tribulations of urban education.
Led in discussion by Cosby and three guest speakers from the tri-state area's education system, the small audience of teachers and students (mostly education majors from West Chester and Temple) were encouraged to listen attentively.
Also, the students were encouraged to question and comment on various issues including student poverty, lack of resources, inexperienced teachers, troubled student home life and a lack of parent involvement.
The close dialogue provided a meaningful opportunity for experienced educators and future teachers to discuss their ideas about education so that the future of urban schools might be improved. The chat was also filmed by the camera crew of Oprah Winfrey, and will air on the show some time in the coming week.
Dr. Paul Morgan presented this opportunity to both his Honors Education and Change, and Democracy and Education classes.
Dr. McGinley provided transportation to the event.
Sarah England is a second-year student of the Honors College double majoring in Vocal Performance and Music Education with a minor in Piano. She can be reached at SE634445@wcupa.edu.
