Field hockey continues to struggle

Colgate was able to score two goals within the first 30 minutes of the contest to put West Chester away. Colgate goalkeeper Sarah Pederson played well in securing a shutout against the Rams. West Chester out shot Colgate but could not capitalize on their opportunities.
Amanda Gilmore scored first for the Red Raiders off an assist from Lauren Remkus. After knocking down numerous shots attempted by West Chester, Lauren Carey scored her fifth goal of the season off of an assist from Laura Denenga.
Pederson recorded 13 saves for Colgate and Joelle Zarefoss had three stops for the Rams while allowing two goals.
On Wednesday, the Lady Rams (3-6) struggled again in a loss to the Villanova Wildcats (7-2) 6-1 at Villanova Stadium. This loss continued the Rams losing streak and pushed it up to five games.
In the first half, Ally Smith scored for the Wildcats on an assist from Emily Donaldson as she scurried in front of the net and shot the ball in passed goalkeeper Joelle Zarefoss. Lauren Wuzzardo also scored for the Wildcats to give them a two-goal lead.
Alex Swayze, a freshman forward for West Chester, recorded her second goal of the season to cut Villanova's lead in half on an assist from Marisa Holzman.
In the second half, Villanova went on the attack. Meg Ryan was able to score on a two-on-one breakaway with Jenn Nazarethian to record the assist. Villanova did not stop. Ally Smith finished off her hat trick for the Wildcats as she scored consecutive goals within six minutes of each other. To finish off the scoring, Allison Boris scored off of an assist by Stephanie Campbell when she tip in a straight shot off the corner.
Villanova goalkeeper Maura McCormick recorded two saves while allowing one goal. Zarefoss has 19 saves while allowing six goals for the Rams.
This week, the Lady Rams travel to Ursinus, UMass on Friday, and Rhode Island on Sunday.
