The problems and concerns surrounding Aramark's quality of food and service may be obvious and well known to all students who have regularly eaten on the West Chester University campus, but are they known to those who write the check? The problems are abundant and range clear across the University at all of the Aramark food service locations. The real question is, do the students really care?
Aramark was contracted to serve West Chester University for five years with two additional one year options. The five year contract expires on June 30, 2009. With less than two years left in the contract, the administration of West Chester University will soon be making a decision on whether to continue for the additional two years with Aramark or begin preparing the new terms for the next bid proposal. The University needs your feedback and input.
A portion of this decision rests on the students' feedback in voicing their opinion about the food service at West Chester University. West Chester University has a staff and administration that truly cares about the students to the degree that sets them apart from other colleges and universities. However, if the staff and administration do not know the extent of the problems and concerns, they can not address them and positive change will not occur.
To create a means to gather student concerns, the Off Campus & Commuter Association (OCCA) has created an ad-hoc board: THE STUDENT FOOD SERVICE REVIEW BOARD. It is a 100% student board that will catalog the complaints of the students in an attempt to do two things. First, it will address each complaint with Aramark management in an attempt to improve the food service situation immediately. Second, it will bring the problems and concerns to the administration's attention to ensure that they have a more informed basis to make a well-grounded decision in reference to both contract extension and the next contract.
The review board will be co-chaired by Ben Bräutigam, Student Government Association (SGA) President, and Anthony DiJiacomo, OCCA President. The members of the nine-member, closed-door review board will include the Student Trustee, representatives from the Residence Hall Association (RHA), the Union Advisory Board (UAB), SGA, and OCCA, and a student-at-large.
Do the students really care? It is up to each student to answer that question and make a difference on this campus for themselves and for future classes. Let your voice be heard. Email your complaints, documented with specific instances (date, time, and location), to OCCA@wcupa.edu. Don't do this just once, but continue doing this throughout the year. By doing so, the students at West Chester University will send a loud and clear message to the Aramark officials and the University administrators that we do care and we want change!
