The West Chester University hockey team traveled to College Park, Maryland on Saturday to face ECHA conference foe the Maryland Terrapins. Unfortunately for the Terrapins, they run into a team that was about as happy as a wounded grizzly bear which the Golden Rams dominated, winning 13-6.
The Terrapins, in their first year competing in the ECHA matched up against the Golden Rams in their second conference game. Maryland surprisingly jumped out to a 2-1 lead that had observers questioning whether or not West Chester was adhering to their time honored tradition of playing to the level of the competition.
Fortunately for the Golden Rams, they kicked it into gear and never looked back. Paced by captain Jim Gehring's two goals and Pat Johnson's three goal, three assist performance, WCU was able to put up about as much offense as the Philadelphia Eagles have in the past few weeks en route to a 13-6 victory.
For one of the few games this year, the team did not have to rely on one line. While Gehring, Johnson and Eddie Devine all contributed their usual output, the depth on the team started to emerge.
Drew Mervin, Andrew Reuter, Eric Keene and Kenny Bergeron all played outstanding hockey and helped make up for the loss of one of the Rams' top scorers, Robert Bushman, to a shoulder injury.
Bushman is expected to be sidelined for at least one more week following a shoulder sprain suffered last weekend against Rhode Island.
The Rams will need the balanced offense not only next week against Maryland again, but it is something they desperately need going into the meat of their schedule in order to ensure that teams are not able to simply zero in on Gehring, Johnson, Devine and Bushman.
The Golden Rams, lead by Pat Johnson's team leading 22 points this season are a perfect 3-0 in ECHA play this year, and stand at 7-2-2 overall.
Sunday's game against Lehigh ended too late to be included in this edition.
Next week, West Chester will play one game, another showdown with the Terrapins. On Friday, the Golden Rams will play host at Iceline.
