On Saturday Feb. 9, the West Chester University Lady Rams (13-8, 5-2 PSAC East) took the trip to Keystone Arena on the campus of Kutztown University. In what could have possibly been the best game of the season thus far, the Lady Rams escaped with a 67-65 come-from-behind victory against the Golden Bears in thrilling fashion.

"It was a great game. Kutztown always shoots the ball better here." Head Coach Deirdre Kane said after the tough win. "They shot the ball extremely well. Mercedes was going for her 1,000th point, she wasn't nervous, she was a beast, and she always plays us tough. She did a great job. I'm just really proud our kids didn't give up,"

In what started as a back and forth effort between the two teams turned into a game that Kutztown would take control of. Playing behind an inspired Mercedes Van Wagner, who entered the game 11 points shy of 1,000 for her career, the Golden Bears took control midway through the first half to go into the half with a 41-34 lead.

Van Wagner etched her name in Kutztown history when she scored her 1,000th point around the seven minute mark.

Natalie Winters led West Chester with 13 points, including three three-pointers coming off the bench in the first half. The Lady Rams shot 42.4 percent from the field in the half.

Kutztown had three players (Van Wagner, Melissa McQuade and Rachel Wisemiller) score in double-figures in the first half. The Golden Bears also shot 48.3 percent from the field and 9-10 from the free throw line.

During the second half, West Chester came out motivated and began to play spirited. Trailing by as many as seven points throughout the second half, the Lady Rams began their march at about the seven minute mark.

Led by a complete team effort, West Chester finished the game on a 21-12 run to stun the Kutztown faithful and leave Keystone Arena with a victory.

Dana Weems led West Chester with 18 points, nine rebounds and six steals. Janelle Garber finished with a game-high 11 rebounds and four points. Winters finished with 15 points. Amanda Vitzakovitch finished with 12 points, shooting 5-6 from the field and 2-3 from behind the arc.
