Lambda Alpha Upsilon, a West Chester University Latino fraternity, hosted "Lambda Week" on March 24 through March 28 to promote awareness and unity on campus through nightly events.
The goal of Lambda Week was to educate students about important issues they face on a daily basis. The fraternity brothers held a different educational, social or entertaining activity each night that incorporated brotherhood, scholarship and community service.
The week was kicked off by a Latin food sale on Monday afternoon, which was held at Sykes Student Union. Participants were charged $4 a platter, and some proceeds went to support the New York AIDS Walk 2008. Tuesday night, the brothers held an interactive presentation on HIV and AIDS awareness called "It can happen to you too."
The topic of Wednesday's event was studying abroad. Students were informed about study abroad programs offered and heard first- hand experiences from WCU alumni. Thursday night was a presentation with the brothers of Lambda Alpha Upsilon held at the WCU library. This was a way to encourage students to keep their grades up since the semester is winding down.
The final night of Lambda Week was a community service event at the YMCA in West Chester. The brothers volunteered to help local students at an after-school program. As the week went on, supporters were given raffle tickets when in attendance at the events. At the end of the week, the lucky winner of the raffle received Ram Bucks from the brothers of Lambda Alpha Upsilon as an incentive and a token of appreciation for participating in the weeks events.
This week was not the first event for this involved WCU organization. Lambda Week was also held last spring. In the fall, Latino/a Awareness Week was hosted to celebrate Latino/a Heritage Month. Some of the events included a bone marrow information session, West Chester community park clean-up, salsa dance workshops and several of the events from this year's Lambda week.
