Cobra Starship’s notorious front man, Gabe Saporta, claims that he, “awoke one morning from uneasy dreams to find himself transformed in his bed into a monstrous vermin,” or at least that is what his Twitter page alleges.

I am guessing this happened post- 2009’s “Hot Mess,” and definitely post- 2007’s “Viva La Cobra” (easily their strongest album to date).

Cobra Starship’s latest album, “Night Shades,” lacks the band’s signature venom and finds it replaced with standard music industry pop cheese.

Most of the album comes off as a poorly executed attempt to mimic the club-friendly synth of artists like David Guetta and LMFAO.

Unfortunately, though, Saporta is deeper and more talented than the average party-friendly pop star; he’s not meant to be Ke$ha, and this is made abundantly clear throughout the larger portion of “Night Shades.”

“Don’t Blame the World It’s the DJ’s Fault” is perhaps their saddest stab at radio-ready disco.

They even adorned the single release with the face of Full House’s DJ Tanner, a loose connection that gave me a chuckle until I uploaded the song to my iPod.

“Your troubles will stop when the DJ drops it. Get, get, get on the beat.” No, Cobra Starship. It is your fault.

I would give it a C-.

Tracks to check out: “You Make Me Feel…” (Feat. Sabi), “#1Nite (One Night)”, and “Fool Like Me”(feat. Plastincines)
