Porscha Speller has the Women’s Basketball team off to a solid 2-0 start, leading the team in scoring (20.0 PPG), three-point field goal percentage (*45.5 percent), total steals (17) and blocks (four).
Speller is coming off of a season in which she made First Team All-PSAC and was named PSAC East Athlete of the Week twice, and she’s looking to build on her decorated junior campaign with a strong senior season.
Speller joined us in this week’s edition of The Hot Seat to discuss the team’s goals for this upcoming season, her biggest role models and her favorite album of 2017.

B.J Boyer (BB): What’s the main goal for WCU Women’s Basketball this season?
Porscha Speller (PS): The main goal for the women’s basketball team this season is to play together and accomplish the goals we set out to get such as win the East, PSAC Championship, and to be regional champs.
BB: What’s the greatest strength of the team?
PS: The greatest strength of our team is our team chemistry. That is a big strength on our team that we have lacked previous years.
BB: You were First Team All-PSAC East last season. How do you plan to build on that this year and do you think you can repeat that feat?
PS: Team goals come first then my individual goals follow. I’m off to a great start and I’m pretty confident that I can get first team again. I would like to be picked for higher individual awards for my senior year.
BB: How would you describe your style of play?
PS: I would describe my style of play as smooth. I’m an all-around player.
BB: What makes the game of basketball so special to you?
PS: The game of basketball is so special to me because I’ve been playing since I was five years old and being a basketball player made me the woman I am today. It has been a big part of my life.
BB: What’s your favorite album of 2017?
PS: PNB Rock: “Catch These Vibes.”
BB: Who is your biggest role model?
PS: My role models are my parents because they have been through a lot but wake up every day and keep going. They never let life bring them down even when times get tough. I get my strength from them
BB: You’ve got to trust one member of the team with the aux cord before a game. Who is it, and what do you think they play?
PS: Lex Gunna. She would play “Mind Right” by Young Thug.
BB: Who’s your favorite basketball player of all-time and why?
PS: I’m actually not a basketball fan outside of playing myself. I’ve never had a favorite player or looked up to any player.
